Fresh violence in Manipur: Five dead in Jiribam; security forces target militant bunkers

Manipur violence: Situation turned tense once again in Manipur's Jiribam district on Saturday, resulting in the deaths of five persons, according to police reports. The conflict, which has plagued the region, escalated over the weekend.

As per information, on Saturday morning, a man was shot dead while sleeping, and four others were killed in an ensuing exchange of fire between rival communities. This latest bout of violence in Jiribam adds to the series of violent incidents that have been troubling Manipur.

In response to the insurgent activities, security forces took decisive action on Friday by destroying three militant bunkers in Churachandpur district. This move followed a series of rocket attacks launched by insurgents in adjoining Bishnupur district. These attacks resulted in one death and six injuries. The targeted areas in Bishnupur and Churachandpur have been the focal points of recent unrest, with the militants utilising advanced weaponry such as rockets and drones.

As per the police report, two bunkers located in Mualsang village and one in Laika Mualsau village were demolished by the security forces. The response came after insurgents fired upon police teams, including the Bishnupur Superintendent of Police (SP), who managed to repel the attack. A military helicopter has been deployed for aerial patrolling to monitor the situation and provide additional support.

The situation in the region has been tense, with high-level security meetings convened to assess the law and order situation. The authorities are on high alert, ready to address any emerging threats.

The rocket attacks and the recent violence in Jiribam are part of a broader pattern of instability that has gripped Manipur. Over the past months, the state has witnessed significant unrest due to ethnic violence between the Meitei community, based in Imphal Valley, and the Kuki-Zo groups from the surrounding hills. Since May of last year, the violence has claimed over 200 lives and displaced thousands.

The situation was further exacerbated earlier this week when drones were reported to have dropped bombs on two locations in Imphal West district. These high-tech attacks, previously unseen in the region, have contributed to the heightened atmosphere of fear and uncertainty. Reports of multiple drones being sighted in peripheral areas of Bishnupur and Imphal East districts led residents to turn off their lights in a bid to avoid attracting attention.
