Gujarat man accused of defaming Amul brand over urea controversy faces police case
PTC News Desk: A man from Gandhinagar, Gujarat, has been accused of defaming the popular dairy brand Amul by claiming in a Facebook video that its milk contains urea. The incident led to the filing of a First Information Report (FIR) at the Adalaj police station on Tuesday. As of now, no arrests have been made, according to an official statement.
The complaint was lodged by Ankit Parikh, a senior sales manager at Amulfed, a manufacturing unit owned by the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), which is responsible for the Amul brand.
In his complaint, Parikh alleged that Lakshmikant Parmar, a resident of Gandhinagar, slandered the Amul brand in a Facebook video by making false claims that the packaged milk produced by Amul contains urea. The video further asserted that a government laboratory had confirmed these allegations.
The primary objective of the video was to damage the reputation of the Amul brand and spread baseless rumors, stated the complaint.
Inspector S.R. Muchhal confirmed that the FIR was registered against Parmar under sections 500 (defamation) and 505 (statements conducing to public mischief) of the Indian Penal Code.
The GCMMF, which comprises 18 milk cooperatives in Gujarat, achieved a remarkable sales turnover of Rs 55,055 crore during the fiscal year 2022-23.
