Mamata Banerjee presses PM again: No response to Kolkata doctor murder letter

PTC News Desk: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has sent a follow-up letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi concerning the brutal rape and murder of a post-graduate trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

In her second letter, Banerjee reiterated the contents of her earlier communication dated August 22, 2024, which called for stringent central legislation on rape and exemplary punishment for perpetrators.

She expressed frustration over the lack of a direct response from the Prime Minister's office, noting that she had only received a generic reply from the Union Ministry of Women and Child Development, which she found inadequate given the seriousness of the issue.

The tragic incident occurred on August 9, when the body of the trainee doctor was discovered within the RG Kar hospital premises. The case has sparked widespread protests and strikes by doctors nationwide, with the Supreme Court also intervening to address the matter. The primary suspects, Sanjay Roy and former college principal Sanjib Ghosh, are currently under investigation.

In her letter, Chief Minister Banerjee highlighted the proactive measures taken by her government, including the establishment of ten exclusive Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) courts, 88 Fast Track Special Courts (FTSCs), and 62 additional POCSO-designated courts, all funded by the state. She urged the Prime Minister to support her appeal for the appointment of permanent judicial officers to these courts to strengthen the legal response to such crimes.
