Mahila Shakti: India's struggle for independence from British colonial rule saw immense contributions from countless brave souls, many of whom were women. These women freedom fighters not only participated in the independence movement but also led it from the front, challenging the conventional roles assigned to them by society. 

Here are some of the most notable women freedom fighters whose contributions have left an indelible mark on India's history


Rani Lakshmibai (1828-1858)

Rani Lakshmibai, the Queen of Jhansi, is one of the most iconic figures in Indian history. Known for her bravery, she played a crucial role in the Indian Rebellion of 1857 against British rule. Widowed at a young age, she fought valiantly with her infant son strapped to her back and became a symbol of resistance against the British.

Sarojini Naidu (1879-1949)

Recognised as the 'Nightingale of India', Sarojini Naidu distinguished herself as a prolific poet, captivating orator, and resolute freedom fighter. Her eloquent addresses and impactful literary creations resonated deeply with Indians and left an indelible impression on global listeners. An active participant in the Civil Disobedience Movement, she played a pivotal role in shaping public sentiment against British colonial policies.

Kamala Nehru (1899-1936)

Kamala Nehru, the wife of Jawaharlal Nehru, was actively involved in the freedom struggle. She participated in various protests and was imprisoned for her role in the Civil Disobedience Movement. Kamala's dedication to the cause of independence and her efforts to promote women's education and empowerment are well remembered

Annie Besant (1847-1933)

Annie Besant, an activist hailing from Britain, fervently embraced the cause of India's struggle for independence. Her profound respect for Indian culture and spirituality motivated her to align herself with the Indian National Congress, where she ardently championed the call for self-governance.
