Maharashtra government amends 'Takht Sachkhand Gurdwara Board Act 1956'

PTC News Desk: In a recent cabinet meeting, the Maharashtra Government introduced a new Act amending the Takht Sachkhand Gurdwara Board Act 1956, causing significant controversy. Under the new Act, out of the 17 members, 12 will be directly nominated by the Maharashtra Government, three will be selected, and the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) will now only have the power to nominate two members. Notably, there will be no representation from Parliament or other institutions.

This decision was made during the cabinet meeting held on February 5, where the Maharashtra government passed the Takhat Sachkhand Gurdwara Board Act 2024, amending the existing 1956 Act. However, this move was met with opposition from various Sikh organizations.

In response to the protest, the implementation of the new act was halted on February 29, 2024. The Sikh community, which had been on a series of strikes since February 9, also called off their strike on February 29.

Under the old Act, four members were nominated by the Shiromani Committee in the Gurdwara Board, and there were four members of Sachkhand Hazur Khalsa Diwan. Additionally, there were 17 members, including two members of the Council of Ministers, one Chief Khalsa Diwan, three members elected from seven districts of Marathwada, one from Maharashtra, one from Andhra Pradesh, and the Nanded Collector.
