Maharashtra declares indigenous cow as 'rajyamata-gomata', cites Vedic significance

PTC News Desk: The Maharashtra government declared desi (indigenous) cows 'Rajyamata-Gomata' on Monday, citing their significance since the Vedic period.

Other reasons are the importance of indigenous cow milk in human nutrition, ayurveda and panchgavya treatment, and the use of cow manure in organic farming, according to a government resolution published by the state Agriculture, Dairy Development, Animal Husbandry, and Fisheries Departments.

The decision, announced ahead of the state assembly elections, emphasises the cow's spiritual, scientific, and historical value in Indian society, according to an official. It highlights the important role cows have played in India's cultural landscape for ages, he said.

By making this decision, the state government has highlighted the agricultural benefits of cow dung, which improves soil fertility and adds to human nutrition, as well as the government's efforts to encourage sustainable farming practices, he explained.
