Maharashtra: 7 killed, 30 injured after tree falls on tin shed at Paras in Akola

Police said around 35 to 40 people were buried under the tin shed while seven lost their lives

Maharashtra: 7 killed, 30 injured after tree falls on tin shed at Paras in Akola

Akola, April 10: At least seven people were killed and around thirty were injured after an old tree fell on a tin shed at Paras in Akola, Maharashtra on Sunday. 

Nima Arora, the Collector of Akola, reported that 40 people were present under the shed when the tree fell. Of those present, 36 were taken to hospital, with four being declared dead on arrival. Later, the death toll rose to seven, with one person in critical condition.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed his deep condolences over the incident, in which devotees had gathered for a religious ceremony. Taking to Twitter, Fadnavis said it was painful to report the deaths and offered his respects to them.

The Collector and Superintendent of Police arrived at the scene shortly after and are providing assistance to ensure the timely treatment of the injured. Some of those injured have been admitted to the District General Hospital and those with minor injuries are being treated at Balapur.

Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has decided to provide financial assistance to the families of the deceased from the state government and the Chief Minister's Relief Fund. Further updates are awaited.

Talking about the treatment of the injured, Fadnavis wrote, "Some of the injured have been admitted to the District General Hospital and minor injuries are being treated at Balapur."

"Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has decided to provide financial assistance to the families of the deceased from the state government and the Chief Minister's Relief Fund," he added.
