Madras High Court orders SIT to be formed to probe Anna University sexual assault case

PTC News Desk: The Madras High Court n Saturday, December 28, ordered formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) comprising three female IPS officers—Sneha Priya, Ayman Jamal, and Brinda—to investigate the sexual assault case at Anna University. 


The SIT will also look into the leak of the First Information Report (FIR), which led to the victim's identity being exposed. 

The incident involves the sexual assault of a 19-year-old student and the physical assault of her male friend by two unidentified men on the university campus on December 23. A 37-year-old food vendor from Kotturpuram, Gnanasekharan, has been arrested and allegedly confessed to the crime. Investigations are ongoing to determine if he is connected to other similar incidents. 

The court has ordered the Tamil Nadu government to provide Rs 25 lakh in compensation to the victim for the distress caused by the FIR leak. Additionally, Anna University has been instructed to offer the survivor free tuition, accommodation, and counseling services to help her continue her education without further disruption.
