Lohri 2023: Know timing, significance and traditional festive recipes

Lohri 2023: The auspicious festival of Lohri 2023 is right around the corner. It is believed that the festival marks the passing of the winter solstice. Every year on January 13, this festival is celebrated just before Makar Sankranti.

Lohri is a harvest festival celebrated in North India with great enthusiasm. The celebration of Lohri 2023 is mainly observed among the states of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab and Delhi.

Traditional Festive Recipes

The joyous festival is celebrated by lighting bornfire with our loved ones and lip-smacking food recipes to binge on. The festival of Lohri 2023 gives way to the constant nibbling of peanuts, rice puffs, pop-corns, dates, and other tit-bits. The signature traditional foods like 'gur ki gajak', 'atta laddoo', 'murmura laddoo', 'til ki barfi', dry fruit chikki, 'gur ka halwa', 'til ki revdi' and other such mouth watering-foods. These sweet candies are coated with sesame seeds and loaded with crunchiness.

Significance of Lohri 2023

People celebrate the festival by going around the fire and throwing rice, popcorn, and other produce as a tribute to God. This is in order to receive blessings for a prosperous season ahead. All men and women, including kids, wear traditional dresses and dance to folk music and also to the beats of dhol. Mainly, in Punjab and Delhi everyone enjoys to traditional dances like bhangra and gidda.

This activity is followed by a healthy meal usually, including traditional dishes like 'makki di roti' and 'sarson da saag', which are prepared from corn and spinach. This quintessential north Indian dish is relished by one and all, it can be easily cooked at home.
