'Ladki Behen' scheme gains momentum in Maharashtra despite opposition flak

PTC News Desk: The 'Ladki Behen' scheme has able to gain momentum despite opposition attacks. The scheme which was launched by Maharashtra’s Finance Minister Ajit Pawar in this year’s state budget has become talk of the town across the state especially amongst women.

More than 15 million registrations have been filed under the initiative which aims to offer a monthly payout of ₹1,500 to eligible women. The scheme has gained much popularity in the state despite opposition attacks with their smear campaigns aiming to undermine its success ahead of the upcoming elections.

Opposition have called this women-centric scheme as mere poll gimmick and dismissed the scheme by calling it as empty rhetoric by the government. While constituting the trust in the scheme, large number of women across the state have come forward and registered for the same. With the surge in beneficiaries, opposition shifted the focus and questioned the financial viability of the scheme and accused the state government to borrowing heavily each week to fund the program.

However, opposition's attempt to question financial viability did not work out prompting them to smear moral accusations. Despite various challenges, over 15 million women successfully registered for the scheme, and the first two installments of ₹1,500 were released.

In an attempt to counter the challenged posed by opposition, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar issued public reassurances assuring them that the fund was a gift for the women of Maharashtra and it would not be taken back.
