Himachal: Bridge collapse on NH-305 severs key link between Kullu and Rampur; traffic disrupted, tourists stranded
PTC Web Desk: A crucial bridge on National Highway-305 connecting Kullu district in Himachal Pradesh with Rampur in Shimla has collapsed, completely halting vehicular movement on this key route. The incident occurred around 3 am near Mangalore, when a truck carrying cement was crossing the bridge. The truck fell as the bridge gave way, leaving the driver seriously injured.
The bridge collapse has disrupted road connectivity between several parts of Kullu, Mandi, and Shimla districts. Numerous tourists are stranded between Aut and Luhri due to the traffic disruption.
The damaged bridge was built in the 1970s over a tributary of the Tirthan river, forming a critical connection between Mandi and Kullu districts. Local residents had long demanded its repair, citing its deteriorating condition, but the authorities reportedly ignored repeated warnings.
Public Works Minister Vikramaditya Singh has announced that a Bailey bridge will be constructed at the site soon. He is expected to visit the spot shortly. However, the temporary bridge is likely to take two–three days to become operational, during which residents and commuters will continue to face significant challenges.
With no alternative routes available, people are now crossing the riverbed on foot, posing serious safety risks. Meanwhile, long queues of vehicles have piled up on both sides of the broken bridge.
Connectivity to Kullu's Banjar region, Tirthan Valley, Ani in Shimla district, Rampur, Kinnaur, and Gadagushaini in Mandi has been severely affected. Administrative teams are present on-site, but the lack of alternate roads has worsened the situation.
