Kolkata sexual assault: Convict Sanjay Roy gets life term for sexually assaulting, killing doctor; imposed fine of Rs 50,000
PTC Web Desk: In a significant development, the Sealdah court in West Bengal has sentenced Sanjay Roy to life imprisonment in connection with the RG Kar sexual assault-murder case. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on the convict. The court also ordered West Bengal to provide a compensation of Rs 17 lakh to the victim's family.
During the sentencing at Sealdah court this afternoon, Sanjay Roy, a former civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police, denied the charges, claiming he was being falsely implicated.
The CBI, which had taken over the investigation, argued that the case fell under the "rarest of rare" category and called for the death penalty to uphold public trust in the justice system. However, Additional District and Sessions Judge Anirban Das disagreed, stating the case did not meet the criteria for a death sentence and instead handed down a life sentence.
The victim, a 31-year-old doctor, was found dead under gruesome circumstances on the third floor of the seminar hall at the state-run hospital on August 9 last year. Roy was arrested the following day. He was convicted under Sections 64 (rape), 66 (punishment for causing death), and 103(1) (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
