Kolkata: PM Modi virtually chairs National Ganga Council meeting

Gandhinagar (Gujarat), December 30: Prime Minister Narendra Modi presided over the second meeting of the National Ganga Council (NGC) in Kolkata via video conferencing on Friday.

The Union Minister for Jal Shakti, as well as other Union Ministers who are members of the council, as well as the Chief Ministers of Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, and West Bengal, attended the meeting. Instead of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav attended the meeting.


The Prime Minister virtually attended the meeting after performing the last rites for his mother Heeraben, who died early this morning.

PM Modi also virtually inaugurated a number of Indian Railways projects.

The National Ganga Council has been given overall supervision of pollution prevention and rejuvenation of the Ganga and its tributaries.

The Namami Gange Programme is an Integrated Conservation Mission that was approved by the Central Government in June 2014 as a "Flagship Programme" with a budget of Rs 20,000 crore to achieve the twin goals of effective pollution abatement and conservation and rejuvenation of the national river Ganga.

At the 46th meeting of the National Mission for Clean Ganga's Executive Committee, projects worth approximately Rs 2,700 for the development of sewerage infrastructure in the Ganga basin were approved.

According to the Ministry of Jal Shakti release, out of the approved projects, 12 pertain to the development of sewerage infrastructure in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal worth more than Rs 2,700 crore.
