Kolkata doctor murder: Junior doctors end 42-day protest, resume duties in West Bengal

Kolkata doctor murder: Junior doctors resumed their duties partially on Saturday morning at several government-run hospitals in West Bengal after a 42-day strike.

They were on a 'cease work' protest following the rape and murder of an on-duty female doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

Junior doctors returned to their duties in essential and emergency services at all state-run hospitals, but not in the outpatient department.

"We started our duties today. Our colleagues have begun returning to their different departments as of this morning, but only for essential and emergency services, not for OPDs. Please remember that this is just a partial resumption of duties," Aniket Mahato, one of the agitating doctors, said.

He stated that his colleagues have already travelled to flood-affected parts of the state, where they will establish 'Abhaya clinics' (medical camps) to demonstrate their commitment to public health despite ongoing protests.

The agitated doctors stated that they would wait another seven days for the administration to meet their demands for justice for the deceased doctor and the dismissal of the state health secretary, or else they would resume 'cease work'.

The doctors have been protesting since August 9, when the body of a woman doctor was found at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, demanding justice for the murdered doctor and removing key officials from their positions after alleged involvement in the case.

The CBI, which is probing the case, has arrested many individuals, including the former principal of the RG Kar Hospital, as part of its investigation.
