Kolkata Doctor murder | 'Resume duties in larger public interest': Centre urges protesting doctors

Kolkata Doctor murder: In the midst of a nationwide doctors' strike in protest of the r@pe and murder of a doctor in Kolkata, the Union Health Ministry on Saturday assured them that every effort would be made to ensure their safety.

In an official statement, the Ministry stated that it will organise a committee to recommend measures to ensure the safety of healthcare workers.

The statement came after representatives from the Federation of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA), the Indian Medical Association (IMA), and the Resident Doctors' Associations of Governmental Medical Colleges and Hospitals in Delhi met with health ministry officials.

"The associations have put forth their demands regarding their concern over the safety and security of healthcare workers at the workplace. The Union Ministry of Health & Family Welfare has heard the demands of the representatives and assured them of all possible efforts to ensure the security of healthcare professionals," the statement read.

"The representatives of all the associations were informed that the Government is well aware of the situation and is sensitive to their demands. It was observed that 26 states have already passed legislation for the protection of healthcare workers in their respective states," it added

According to the statement, representatives from all stakeholders, including state governments, will be invited to submit their suggestions to the Committee.

The government further urged that the agitating doctors resume their duties in the "larger public interest" and in light of the rising cases of dengue and malaria.
