Kolkata doctor murder: CBI reports SHO Abhijit Mondol arrived 'unusually' late at crime scene

PTC News Desk: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has raised concerns over a possible larger conspiracy in the rape and murder of a doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. During a court hearing in Sealdah, the agency suggested that the former principal of the college, Dr. Sandip Ghosh, and Abhijit Mondol, the officer-in-charge of the Tala police station, may have played key roles in an alleged cover-up.

The CBI, while seeking their custody, informed the court that the two were in contact after the crime. It was alleged that Dr. Ghosh gave instructions to Mondol on how to proceed with the investigation, raising suspicion about their involvement in downplaying the incident.

Both Ghosh and Mondol were arrested by the CBI last week. The court has since sent them into CBI custody until September 17, allowing the agency to interrogate them face-to-face. “We have got their custody for three days till September 17. Now, both will be questioned together. The duo played vital roles in the RG Kar case,” a CBI officer stated.

One of the key allegations made by the CBI is that Mondol took an "unusually long time" to arrive at the crime scene, despite being informed promptly. According to The Indian Express, the agency revealed that while the crime scene was just a five-minute drive from the Tala police station, Mondol arrived nearly an hour late. He was reportedly notified about the incident at 10:03 a.m. but did not reach the scene until 11:00 a.m.

The tragic crime occurred inside the seminar hall of the hospital, where the victim, a female doctor, was found raped and murdered. She had gone to the hall to rest during an exhausting 36-hour shift. A civic volunteer, Sanjay Roy, has already been arrested in connection with the crime.

In addition to his alleged involvement in the conspiracy, Dr. Sandip Ghosh is under investigation for delaying the filing of the First Information Report (FIR) and allegedly attempting to mischaracterise the murder as a suicide.

The CBI is continuing its investigation into the case, exploring the potential involvement of additional parties and the broader implications of the delayed investigation by local authorities.
