PTC News Desk: CBI Conducts Polygraph Test on Key Suspect in RG Kar Medical College Case; Investigates Alleged Corruption Involving Former Principal Sandip Ghosh. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) conducted a polygraph test on Sanjoy Roy, the primary suspect in the rape and murder case of a woman doctor from the state-run RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata. The test took place on Sunday at Kolkata's Presidency Jail, where Roy is currently being held.
Sanjoy Roy, a 33-year-old civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police, was apprehended by the Kolkata Police on August 10, just one day after the body of the doctor was discovered in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College.
In parallel with the murder investigation, the CBI has launched a probe into allegations of financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital during the tenure of its former principal, Sandip Ghosh. On Sunday, officers from the CBI's anti-corruption branch conducted raids at around 15 locations across Kolkata and the nearby Howrah district, including the residence of Ghosh.
Key Developments in the Investigation:
The polygraph test on Sanjoy Roy was reportedly conducted by a team flown in from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) in Delhi. The test lasted approximately four hours. According to an unidentified official, the CBI also administered polygraph tests on several other individuals at their Kolkata office.
Prior to this, the CBI had conducted polygraph tests on four individuals, including Sandip Ghosh, on Saturday. Although the results of these tests are not admissible as evidence in court, they are expected to provide crucial leads for the ongoing investigation.
The CBI’s investigation into alleged financial scams at RG Kar Medical College revolves around accusations that Sandip Ghosh, during his tenure as principal, illegally profited from unclaimed corpses, sold biomedical waste, and accepted commissions in return for approving tenders.
During Sunday's operation, CBI officers were seen entering Ghosh's residence around 8 a.m. However, they were forced to wait outside for nearly an hour and a half before gaining entry. The questioning of Ghosh by at least seven CBI officers continued until 7 p.m.
In addition to Sandip Ghosh, the CBI also interrogated Sanjay Vashisth, the former medical superintendent and vice-principal of RG Kar Medical College, as well as another professor from the forensic medicine department. The investigation aims to determine the extent of their knowledge regarding the alleged financial misconduct at the institution.
According to a CBI official, significant evidence has been gathered during the searches. "There's a lot," the official told ANI, suggesting that the findings could prove pivotal as the investigation unfolds.
The CBI continues to pursue multiple angles in both the murder investigation and the alleged corruption case, with further developments expected in the coming days.
