Karnataka: Elderly couple ends life after losing Rs 50 lakh to cyber fraud
PTC News Desk: An elderly couple in Karnataka's Belagavi district died by suicide after they were defrauded of Rs 50 lakh by cybercriminals.
The deceased couple have been identified as Diyango Najarat (83) who ended his lfe by slitting his throat while his wife Playviana Najarat consumed poison. The couple left behind a suicide note in which they shared their sorrow after being threatened by fraudsters who posed as officials from Delhi Crime Branch.
The retired couple, both former employees of the Maharashtra Secretariat, paid the demanded amount, but the harassment persisted. The fraudsters continued their threats and extortion, resulting in a total loss of over Rs 50 lakh. With no children or immediate family, the couple chose not to share their ordeal with anyone.
What initially appeared to be a murder case shifted direction when police discovered the couple’s suicide note and analyzed their mobile phone records. Their bodies have been sent to Belagavi BIMS Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
“We have accessed their bank accounts and are still calculating the total amount extorted. This is a serious matter, and a detailed investigation is underway,” said police official.
