Karnataka DGP Praveen Sood named next CBI director

New CBI Director: Praveen Sood, the director general of police (DGP) of Karnataka, was appointed as the next head of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Sunday for a two-year term. He will take over after Subodh Kumar Jaiswal's term ends on May 25.

"Approval of the competent authority is hereby conveyed to the appointment of Praveen Sood, IPS (KN:86) as Director, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a period of two years from the date of assumption of charge of the office vice Subodh Kumar Jaiswal, IPS (MH:85) consequent upon completion of his tenure," the Department of Personnel and Training said.

The 1986-batch IPS officer was among the frontrunner for the top post.

The development comes a day after a high-powered panel comprised of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud, and Lok Sabha leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury met to deliberate on the next CBI chief's name.

Praveen Sood has a long history in law enforcement and has held several critical posts.

Sood graduated from IIT Delhi in 1986 and joined the Indian Police Service (IPS). Beginning his career as an Assistant Superintendent of Police in Mysore in 1989, he went on to serve as Superintendent of Police in Bellary and Raichur before being assigned to Bangalore City as Deputy Commissioner of Police, Law and Order.
