Kangana Ranaut's election as Mandi MP challenged, High Court issues notice

PTC News Desk: Himachal Pradesh High Court issued a notice to Kangana Ranaut, the BJP Lok Sabha member from Mandi, in response to a petition filed by a Kinnaur resident seeking to set aside her election on the grounds that his nomination papers to contest from the Lok Sabha constituency were allegedly wrongly rejected.

Justice Jyotsna Rewal issued the notice and instructed Ranaut to respond by August 21.

Ranaut won the Mandi Lok Sabha seat, defeating Congress contender Vikramaditya Singh by 74,755 votes. She garnered 5,37,002 votes against Singh's 4,62,267 votes.

The petitioner, Layak Ram Negi, pleaded with the returning officer (Deputy Commissioner, Mandi) to set aside Ranaut's election, claiming that his nomination papers were wrongly rejected.

Negi, a former forest department employee, said he was forced to retire prematurely and presented a "no dues certificate" from the department, as well as nomination paperwork, to the returning officer.

However, he was given one day to produce the "no due certificate" from the electricity, water, and telephone departments, and when he did, the returning officer did not accept them and rejected the nomination papers.

He contended that if his papers had been accepted, he could have won the election and requested that it be set aside.
