Who is Justice Yashwant Varma? Alleged discovery of unaccounted cash from his home triggers debate
PTC Web Desk: The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the transfer of Delhi High Court Judge Yashwant Varma to the Allahabad High Court following an “adverse report” against him. The move comes after a media report claimed that a large sum of cash was discovered at his residence following a fire incident. Justice Varma, who has a long-standing legal career, was originally appointed as a judge in the Allahabad High Court before his transfer to Delhi in 2021.
According to a report by The Times of India, the alleged discovery of unaccounted cash occurred after a fire broke out at Justice Varma’s official bungalow. At the time of the incident, he was not in Delhi, and the fire brigade and police were called by his family members. After the flames were extinguished, officials reportedly found a significant amount of cash inside a room, leading to an official record of the recovery.
Who is Justice Yashwant Varma?
Born on January 6, 1969, in Allahabad, Justice Yashwant Varma pursued his BCom (Hons) from Hansraj College, Delhi University, and later completed his LLB from Rewa University, Madhya Pradesh. He began his legal career in 1992 and specialised in constitutional law, taxation, and corporate regulations.
He was appointed as an additional judge of the Allahabad High Court in 2014 and became a permanent judge in 2016. Before his elevation, he served as special counsel for the Allahabad High Court and held the position of chief standing counsel for Uttar Pradesh. He was transferred to the Delhi High Court in 2021.
Led by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, the Supreme Court Collegium recommended his transfer to the Central government. The decision is seen as a consequence of the reported cash discovery, although no official statement has been made on the matter.
