Justice Varma takes oath as Allahabad High Court Judge but won't be assigned judicial work

PTC News Desk: Justice Yashwant Varma took oath as Judge of Allahabad High Court amid Supreme Court-monitored inquiry in connection with cash row. However, Justice Varma will not be assigned any kind of judicial work.

Unlike the normal public oath-taking ceremonies typically held for judges, Justice Varma took his oath in a private chamber.

Despite protests by the Allahabad Bar Association over his transfer, he was repatriated from Delhi to the Allahabad High Court as per the directives issued by Central government. The notification was based on the Supreme Court Collegium's recommendation.

In protest against Justice Varma's transfer, the members of bar association have launched an indefinite hunger strike and said that they would not tolerate the corruption charges against judges. However, the strike was put on hold after the CJI assured them that their demand will be taken into consideration.

Earlier, the Supreme Court had dismissed a plea seeking FIR against Justice Varma while calling the petition 'premature'. The top court said that the three-member panel was investigating the matter and a decision on registration of FIR after the completion of inquiry.
