PTC Web Desk:  In a tragic outbreak, five children have lost their lives due to cerebral malaria at Nagar Bhitha village, located in Mandar block of Sahibganj district, Jharkhand. Besides, several other resident, including children, have been diagnosed with the disease.

The situation came to light on Sunday when the village head informed a Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) worker from Ghatiyaari about the deaths. Upon receiving the report, the Deputy Commissioner immediately dispatched a team of health officials to the affected village. The medical team collected blood samples from infected patients and provided essential medications. The collected samples are set to be tested at Dumka to confirm the presence of the deadly parasite.

The children who succumbed to the disease between March 12 and March 23 have been identified as: Jeeta Pahariya (2), Vikas Pahariya (5), Befre Pahariya (4), Etwari Pahariya (2) and  Sajni Paharin (3).

Despite the fatalities occurring over a span of several days, the village informed the authorities only on Sunday morning. The Civil Surgeon has confirmed that the deaths were due to cerebral malaria. He said health teams are stationed in the village, and further inspections will be carried out in nearby settlements.

A medical team has already collected 32 blood samples from affected men, women, and children. These samples have been sent to Dumka for laboratory testing.

What is cerebral malaria?

Cerebral malaria is a life-threatening condition caused by Plasmodium falciparum, the deadliest malaria parasite. It primarily affects the brain, leading to severe neurological complications. Symptoms include high fever, severe headaches, vomiting, diarrhea, and loss of consciousness.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), cerebral malaria is diagnosed when a patient exhibits coma for at least one hour post-seizure, has Plasmodium falciparum parasites in blood smears, and no other identifiable cause of coma. If not treated promptly, it has a high fatality rate.

Preventive measures and awareness

Health experts are urging villagers to take preventive measures, including:

Using mosquito nets while sleeping

Applying mosquito repellents

Keeping surroundings clean and dry to prevent mosquito breeding

Seeking immediate medical attention in case of high fever or severe headaches
