New Delhi, May 27: Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid respect to former Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on his 59th death anniversary on Saturday.

"On his death anniversary, I pay tributes to our former PM Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru," PM Modi said on Twitter.

Meanwhile, the Congress Committee paid floral tribute to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on his death anniversary.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, party General Secretary KC Venugopal, and former MP Rahul Gandhi offered floral tributes to the former Prime Minister at the day at Shanti Van in the national capital.

Jawaharlal Nehru was a freedom fighter who was instrumental in India's independence movement. He then became India's first Prime Minister after independence in 1947.

Nehru held the post for more than 16 years before passing away due to a heart attack on May 27, 1964. Lal Bahadur Shastri became India's second Prime Minister.

Nehru is widely regarded as the pioneer of India's Non-Aligned Movement (NAM). Nehru was nicknamed 'Chacha Nehru' because of his affection for children, and his birthday, November 14, is also celebrated as Children's Day in India every year.
