Indian academician arrested in US, faces deportation over alleged Hamas ties
PTC News Desk: An Indian academician at Georgetown University has been detained by Trump administration over allegations of spreading antisemitism and allegedly having ties with the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas.
Badar Khan Suri is said to have “close connections to a known or suspected terrorist", Tricia McLaughlin, Assistant Secretary Department of Homeland Security said.
“Suri was a foreign exchange student at Georgetown University actively spreading Hamas propaganda and promoting antisemitism on social media," Tricia McLaughlin wrote on X, adding, “Suri has close connections to a known or suspected terrorist, who is a senior advisor to Hamas. The Secretary of State issued a determination on March 15, 2025 that Suri’s activities and presence in the United States rendered him deportable under INA section 237(a)(4)(C)(i)."
An Indian national and postdoctoral fellow, Badar Khan Suri was arrested outside his residence in Virginia on Monday by federal agents after he was told being revoked. Suri, who is married to an American citizen, is awaiting a date in the immigration court, according to his lawyer.
"If an accomplished scholar who focusses on conflict resolution is whom the government decides is bad for foreign policy, then perhaps the problem is with the government, not the scholar," Suri's lawyer said.
