India's first Army Chief KM Cariappa: The legend behind Army Day
PTC News Desk: Army Day is celebrated every year on Januray 15 to commemorate Field Marshal Kodandera Madappa Cariappa who scripted history after becoming independent India’s first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army replacing General Sir Francis Roy Bucher.
On this day the nation honours KM Cariappa whose ironclad principles will continue to inspire generations and set and enduring example.
The day marks a symbol of victory when India stood out with its independent military and unified institution. Cariappa made the Army his family and for him there were no favourits but only equals. He was recognized for walking among his soldiers, sharing meals with them, and addressing their concerns. This approach also applied to his own son during the 1965 war, demonstrating that for him, there were no favorites—only equals.
When KM Cariappa chose duty over family
During the second Indo-Pak war, Squadron Leader KC Cariappa, son of the legendary KM Cariappa was shot down while flying his aircraft. He was later captured by Pakistani forces and became ha high profile prisoner of war.
Pakistan's then President, General Ayub Khan who had served under KM Cariappa during the British Indian Army days offered to release his son as a gesture. However, father Cariappa sternly refused citing that in Army there are no favourites and only equality. “He is my son no longer,” he said. “He is the son of India, and every soldier in your custody deserves equal treatment.”
The release of Cariappa's Son
During captivity in Pakistan, KM Cariappa was treated with respect owing to his father's stature and position and also his own rank. After his release, KC Cariappa continued to serve in the Indian Air Force. He later retired as an Air Marshal, contributing significantly to the force throughout his career.
