India may receive above-normal rainfall in 2025, IMD predicts
PTC News Desk: The Indian Meteorological Department on Tuesday announced that the country is expected to witness above-normal monsoon rainfall in 2025 with neutral El Nino conditions.
According to the Ministry of Earth Sciences, the Southwest Monsoon typically begins over Kerala around June 1 until September. The prediction of above-average rainfall could significantly fruitful for agriculture sector.
According to the weather department, the forecast indicates that most parts of the country may benefit from rainfall conditions as 52 % of the net cultivated area relies on the monsoon rains, making it essential for crop production and replenishment of key reservoirs responsible for power generation and drinking water.
Meanwhile, rainfall is expected to be below normal in Ladakh, the Northeast, and Tamil Nadu during the four-month monsoon season.
In addition, a promising sign this year is the decreased snow cover across Eurasia and the Himalayan region. Traditionally, reduced snow in these areas has been linked to more intense monsoon rainfall in India.
Given the supportive oceanic and atmospheric patterns, this year’s monsoon is anticipated to be above normal, offering a significant boost to the agricultural sector.
