Hand-crafted carpets with Peacock and Lotus motifs embellish New Parliament Building
NEW DELHI: As lawmakers step into the newly constructed Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha complexes on Sunday, they will traverse through the halls of power adorned with meticulously hand-crafted carpets. These carpets have been meticulously designed over the course of seven months by a century-old company established by three British individuals - FH Oakley, FH Bowden, and JAL Taylor. The intricate designs feature peacock and lotus motifs as the central theme.
OBEETEE, a renowned manufacturer of hand-knotted carpets, now under the ownership of Kolkata-based businessman Rudra Chatterjee, has a rich heritage spanning 102 years. Their carpets, created in Mirzapur, a town situated on the banks of the Ganges along the Grand Trunk Road in Uttar Pradesh, have graced some of the world's most iconic landmarks, palaces, luxurious hotels, renowned residences, and government buildings. Notable establishments adorned with their carpets include the Rashtrapati Bhawan in New Delhi, the JW Marriott Essex House in New York, The Oberoi in Marrakech, Morocco, and Soho House in Chicago. Even Queen Elizabeth II visited the Mirzapur factory in 1995.
When discussing the inspiration behind the carpet designs for the central vista, Chatterjee emphasized their connection to India's cultural history and beliefs. He stated, "The carpet designs in the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha halls go beyond mere aesthetics. They delve into India's deep-rooted heritage and cultural significance. We have endeavored to encapsulate the essence of India's rich legacy and incorporate it into the design of these prestigious spaces."
Inauguration of New Parliament Building HIGHLIGHTS: Ahead of its inauguration today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally installed the historic 'Sengol' at the new parliament building.
Accompanied by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and revered Adheenam seers, the Prime Minister also participated in a puja (religious ceremony) and unveiled the building's plaque. Following the ceremony, an all-religion prayer took place, fostering unity and inclusivity.
The inauguration of the new parliament building will be graced by the Prime Minister today, with approximately 60 religious leaders also invited to the event. The new building provides a spacious environment compared to its predecessor, which dates back to 1927. It beautifully showcases India's diverse culture through the inclusion of carpets from Mirzapur in Uttar Pradesh, bamboo flooring from Tripura, and stone carvings from Rajasthan.
The interior of the new parliament building embraces three national symbols as its themes: the lotus, the peacock, and the banyan tree. This triangular-shaped four-storey structure spans an impressive built-up area of 64,500 square meters. Three main gates, namely Gyan Dwar, Shakti Dwar, and Karma Dwar, welcome visitors into the grand premises.
The existing parliament building, which has stood for nearly a century, was completed in 1927. In contrast, the new parliament building, constructed by Tata Projects Ltd, features a magnificent constitution hall that showcases India's democratic heritage. Additionally, it encompasses a lounge for Members of Parliament, a library, multiple committee rooms, dining areas, and ample parking space.
While 25 political parties have confirmed their attendance, it is noteworthy that some opposition parties, including the Congress, have announced their decision to boycott the event.
