In a first, SC begins AI-aided live transcription of proceedings

New Delhi, February 21: The Supreme Court began live transcription of court proceedings using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Natural Language Processing technology on an experimental basis on Tuesday.

The live transcription was carried out in the courtroom of Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud, who presided over a Constitution Bench today. The transcription will be given to lawyers for review before being posted on the Supreme Court website. In the courtroom, a screen displaying the live transcription of court proceedings has been installed. It has also been learned that transcripts of oral arguments will be made available on the court's website.

CJI DY Chandrachud stated that this facility would be a huge resource for both lawyers and law colleges.

In 2022, the Supreme Court streamed its proceedings on YouTube for the public to watch. More than eight lakh people tuned in to watch the proceedings.

On September 20, 2022, the Full Court decided to live stream the proceedings of the Constitution benches, and the Registry soon after began trial runs.

The then-CJI Dipak Misra-led three-judge bench agreed in 2018 to begin a phased live telecast of proceedings.
