Immigration Bill approved in Lok Sabha; 'India not a dharmshala', says Amit Shah

PTC Web Desk: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday asserted that India welcomes tourists, students, patients, and business visitors, but will not tolerate those who pose a threat to the nation. Speaking during a debate in the Lok Sabha on the Immigration and Foreigners Bill, 2025, Shah made it clear that the Narendra Modi-led government will act strictly against individuals with malicious intent.

The Lok Sabha passed the Immigration and Foreigners Bill, 2025, during the session. Defending the provisions of the new legislation, the Home Minister said, "India is open to those who wish to come here for tourism, education, healthcare, or business purposes. But those who arrive with the wrong intentions will face strict action."

Shah further stated that while India is a hospitable country, it is not a "dharmshala" (free shelter) for anyone to misuse. "We will only stop those who pose a security threat or have malafide intentions. India has always welcomed genuine visitors and will continue to do so," he added.

The Home Minister clarified that the Bill is not aimed at creating hurdles for international travellers but is focused on safeguarding India’s internal security and ensuring that immigration processes are transparent and efficient.

The Immigration and Foreigners Bill, 2025, aims to replace outdated laws and streamline the entry, stay, and exit of foreigners in India. It also seeks to strengthen border management and tackle illegal immigration effectively.
