Heatwave grips north India while south and northeast brace for rainfall: IMD issues alerts | Check Details

PTC Web Desk: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather advisory highlighting contrasting weather patterns across India. While northern, central, and eastern parts of the country are facing severe heatwave conditions, southern and northeastern states are expected to receive rainfall over the next few days.

Heatwave warnings across north and central India

Cities in Delhi, Odisha, Rajasthan, Bihar, and surrounding regions are witnessing intense heatwave conditions. The IMD has issued a yellow alert in Delhi from Thursday through Saturday, warning of temperatures soaring up to 41°C. Clear skies and sunny weather are expected throughout the day. Several districts in Odisha, including Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Sonepur, Boudh, Bolangir, and Bargarh, are under an orange alert for severe heatwaves. Other states such as Rajasthan, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, and Haryana are also in the grip of extreme temperatures.

The IMD has advised citizens, especially vulnerable groups such as infants, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions, to take adequate precautions. The advisory urges people to avoid dehydrating beverages such as alcohol, tea, coffee, and soft drinks, and to refrain from consuming stale or high-protein food.

Delhi’s air quality deteriorates

Alongside soaring temperatures, the Air Quality Index (AQI) in several parts of Delhi continues to remain in the poor category. Areas such as Okhla, Anand Vihar, R K Puram, Chandni Chowk, Dwarka, and Shadipur reported unsatisfactory air quality levels on Wednesday.

Rainfall in northeast and southern India

In contrast, the northeastern states of Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Tripura are expected to receive heavy rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds from April 24 to April 26. Meanwhile, isolated rainfall is forecast for southern states, including Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, and Andhra Pradesh today, bringing a brief respite from the heat for those regions.
