Housing society stirs controversy with bizarre dress code, bans lungis and nighties in common areas

Greater Noida, June 14: The Residents' Welfare Association (RWA) of Himsagar Society in Phi-2, Greater Noida, has sparked controversy by imposing a dress code for residents in common areas and park facilities.

The RWA's circular, dated June 10, went viral on social media as it requested residents to refrain from wearing lungis and nighties when outside their flats. The notice faced criticism online for infringing on personal choices and attempting to police residents' attire.

The notice, titled "Dress code for walking in the premises of the society," was issued by the RWA of Himsagar Society. It emphasised the importance of appropriate conduct and dress to avoid objections from others. Specifically, it discouraged the wearing of lungis and nighties, which are considered home attire.

While RWA President CK Kalra supported the decision, stating that it aimed to ensure mutual respect and prevent discomfort, the notice received mixed reactions. Some individuals appreciated the move, believing certain dress protocols should be followed, while others criticised it for being exclusionary and reminiscent of outdated thinking.

Social media users shared diverse opinions, with some acknowledging the need for appropriate attire in public spaces, while others questioned the inclusivity and expressed concerns about freedom of expression. The incident sparked a broader discussion on societal priorities and the role of RWAs in governing residents' choices.
