HMPV cases surge in India: Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat report new infections; total cases 11

PTC Web Desk: The Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), a respiratory virus known to cause flu-like symptoms, has surfaced as a growing health concern in India. Two new cases were reported in India on Thursday, bringing the nationwide total to 11. In Uttar Pradesh, a 60-year-old woman tested positive for the virus in Lucknow. Meanwhile, Gujarat's Himmatnagar reported an HMPV case in an 8-year-old boy, according to media reports.

State-wise breakdown of HMPV cases is Maharashtra: 3 cases; Gujarat, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu: 2 cases each; West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh: 1 case each. The emergence of HMPV has prompted several states to increase vigilance:

Punjab has advised the elderly and children to wear masks in public. In Gujarat, hospitals are setting up isolation wards for infected patients. Haryana has issued directives to the health authorities to monitor and report HMPV cases.

Who is most at risk?

HMPV primarily affects children under two years, causing cold-like symptoms and respiratory issues. The virus is airborne and spreads through respiratory droplets, much like influenza and COVID-19.

Experts from AIIMS say HPMV is not a new virus; it was first identified in 2001. "The infection is typically self-limiting and does not require antibiotics," he said, advising people to maintain hydration, eat nutritious meals, and avoid crowded areas.

"HMPV is a seasonal virus. Hospitalisations are not solely due to HMPV but also due to other viral infections," said a doctor.

The Central Government has urged states to monitor cases of influenza-like illness (ILI) and severe acute respiratory infections (SARI). Testing facilities for HMPV are being expanded under the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

Health Minister JP Nadda has assured the public that there is no cause for alarm. "HMPV infections are common during winter. Our monitoring systems and testing facilities are robust," he stated.
