Hemkund Yatra: Sikh pilgrimage site in Uttarakhand still under thick snow cover of 12 to 15 feet | See Pics
PTC Web Desk: Gurdwara Shri Hemkund Sahib, a revered Sikh pilgrimage site nestled amidst the breathtaking Himalayan peaks, is currently cloaked in a thick layer of snow, measuring approximately 12 to 15 feet. The surrounding lake, mirroring the tranquility of the landscape, resembles a pristine white sheet, adding to the picturesque beauty of the region.
However, this natural spectacle presents a formidable challenge for pilgrims, as access to the sacred site is obstructed by heavy snowfall, particularly around a glacier situated about two km before reaching Hemkund Sahib.
Traditionally entrusted with the task of clearing the snow-laden path, Indian Army personnel shoulders the responsibility once again this year. Originally slated to commence their journey on April 15, Indian Army soldiers were set to depart for Ghagriya, where they would establish their base camp within the gurdwara complex and initiate daily snow-cutting operations. However, in light of the state elections scheduled for April 19, and in response to a request from the gurdwara trust, the commencement of this crucial task has been rescheduled to April 20.
The pilgrimage season to Gurdwara Hemkund Sahib holds profound significance for devotees, marking a sacred journey of faith and devotion. In anticipation of this spiritual journey, the Uttarakhand Government, in collaboration with the Shri Hemkund Sahib Trust, has announced May 25 as the auspicious date for the opening of the pilgrimage.
Despite the challenges posed by the harsh winter conditions, efforts are underway to ensure a safe and accessible passage for pilgrims.
