Heavy snowfall in Himachal Pradesh; over three lakh visitors in 48 hours | Check travel information

PTC Web Desk: Himachal Pradesh has witnessed a massive influx of tourists eager to experience snowfall, with approximately 3 lakh visitors arriving in just 48 hours from December 24 to 26. According to official data, 81,000 vehicles entered the state during this period.

Shimla remains the most popular destination, attracting nearly 1.75 lakh tourists in 65,000 vehicles. Kullu district is a close second, welcoming over 1.25 lakh visitors in 16,000 vehicles, with hotspots like Manali and surrounding areas bustling with activity.


Tourists are enjoying activities such as paragliding, snow-bike riding, skiing, horseback riding, and yak rides in places like Narkanda, Mahasu Peak, and Kufri. Additionally, visitors are using telescopes at Mahasu Peak to view the snow-covered Himalayan range and the China border.

The Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for heavy snowfall until December 28. The authorities have advised tourists to avoid high-altitude areas for safety reasons.

Essential travel information 

NH-5 Route for Shimla, Kufri, and Narkanda

Visitors can reach snow-laden destinations in Shimla, Kufri, and Narkanda via the Chandigarh-Shimla-Kinnaur National Highway (NH-5). 

Chandigarh-Manali NH Route for Kullu-Manali

Popular spots in Kullu include Solang Valley and Anjani Mahadev. Solang Valley, located 18 km from Manali, offers paragliding, motorbiking, and horseback riding. Beyond Solang, only 4x4 vehicles are allowed to proceed to the Atal Tunnel and Rohtang.

Snow sestinations in Lahaul-Spiti

Tourists can visit snow-clad regions in Lahaul-Spiti, including Koksar, the north and south portals of the Atal Tunnel, Pagal Nala, Jispa, and Sissu. These locations are accessible via the Chandigarh-Manali National Highway and offer various hotels and homestays for comfortable lodging.
