Heavy rain, hailstorm and cold wave to hit North India; temperatures to plunge
PTC Web Desk: Delhi and its surrounding regions experienced moderate to heavy rainfall on Friday, resulting in a noticeable drop in temperatures. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for the capital and a hailstorm warning for several areas across North India.
The rain, which began early in the morning and persisted throughout the day, caused traffic disruptions in parts of South, Central, and North Delhi, along with waterlogging in low-lying areas. The highest rainfall was recorded at Delhi University's North Campus. The IMD predicts additional showers driven by a Western Disturbance interacting with easterly winds, with the rain expected to continue over the weekend.
An orange alert has been declared for Delhi for Friday, while yellow alerts are in place for Saturday and Sunday. The IMD stated that heavy rainfall could impact several regions, including Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Chandigarh, and West Uttar Pradesh. Thunderstorms accompanied by hailstorms are likely over Southeast Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, East Rajasthan, and Gujarat.
The Western Himalayan Region is expected to witness widespread rain and snowfall on December 27 and 28. Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand may experience isolated heavy rainfall or snowfall on these dates, with cold wave conditions likely to intensify starting Sunday.
In Rajasthan, light to moderate rainfall was recorded in multiple areas, with Churu experiencing the lowest temperature of 5.4°C. Night temperatures ranged from 5.4°C in Churu to 17.2°C in Vanasthali, offering some respite from severe cold.
