Heatwave warning as Lok Sabha elections reach crucial phase

PTC News Desk:  The weather department's forecast of heatwave to severe heatwave conditions over the next five days casts a shadow over the fervent election atmosphere, drawing concerns as political rallies and gatherings swell under the scorching sun.

As the nation gears up for the crucial third phase of Lok Sabha Elections, voters are bracing themselves for battling sweltering conditions, particularly in states like West Bengal, Bihar, Karnataka, Kerala, Goa, and East Uttar Pradesh, slated for polling on May 7.

The Election Commission, cognizant of the risks posed by the soaring temperatures, has called upon political parties and authorities to enhance measures ensuring the safety of voters, candidates, and polling station personnel.

Authorities emphasise the imperative for individuals to exercise extreme caution amidst such conditions, warning of potential sunburn and heatstroke incidents. With temperatures in Maharashtra soaring past 40 degrees Celsius, and Odisha and West Bengal grappling with scorching heatwaves disrupting daily life, the situation demands heightened vigilance.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heatwave alert for Kerala's Kollam, Thrissur, and Palakkad districts, cautioning residents to brace for intense heatwave conditions.

Concerns mount among experts regarding the potential impact of rising temperatures on voter turnout during the third phase of polls.

Echoing guidelines from the National Disaster Management Authority, individuals are advised to don light-coloured, loose-fitting attire, shield their heads with caps or cloths, and minimise exposure to direct sunlight. Additionally, staying hydrated by carrying ample fluids is paramount, coupled with vigilance regarding daily weather forecasts and IMD advisories, as emphasised by Dr. Naresh Kumar, Senior Scientist at the India Meteorological Department.

The criteria for identifying a heatwave entail a maximum temperature threshold of at least 40 degrees Celsius in plains, 37 degrees in coastal areas, and 30 degrees in hilly regions, accompanied by a departure from normal temperatures by at least 4.5 notches.
