PTC Web Desk: Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the 10th Sikh Guru, is revered for his significant contributions to Sikhism and his role in shaping a community that values courage, equality, and selfless service. As we commemorate Guru Gobind Singh Ji's birth anniversary (Parkash Utsav), we reflect on his teachings and the impact of his visionary leadership on Sikhism.

Historical Context

Guru Gobind Singh Ji was born on December 22, 1666, in Patna, Bihar, in a period marked by socio-political turmoil. His father, Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, sacrificed his life for religious freedom, setting the stage for Guru Gobind Singh Ji's leadership.

Legacy of Guru Gobind Singh Ji

Guru Gobind Singh Ji assumed the Guruship at the young age of nine, following the martyrdom of his father. He played a pivotal role in shaping Sikhism into a distinct and sovereign faith. Guru Sahab established the Khalsa, a community of baptised Sikhs, symbolising courage, discipline, and commitment to justice.

The Khalsa and the Five Ks

Guru Gobind Singh Ji introduced the concept of the Khalsa Panth, a community characterised by equality and a strong commitment to justice. The Five Ks – Kesh (uncut hair), Kara (steel bracelet), Kanga (wooden comb), Kachera (cotton undergarments), and Kirpan (ceremonial sword) – became the symbols of a baptised Sikh's identity.
