Gurmeet Ram Rahim granted parole, Dera Sacha Sauda chief walks out of jail
PTC News Desk: Haryana government has granted Dera Sacha Sauda chief and rape convict parole on Tuesday. Ram Rahim who is convicted in multiple rape and murder cases walked out of Sunaria jail in Harayana's Rohtak.
According to officials, he was released on Tuesday morning. For the first time since his conviction in 2017, he will be visiting his Sirsa based Dera during his parole. Earlier, he was only permitted to visit his Baghpat based ashram in Uttar Pradesh.
Ram Rahim's Advocate Jitendra Khurana said that Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh parole is his legal right, and therefore should not be linked to politics.
"The 30-day parole has been granted to him today as per the law. Every prisoner has the legal right to apply for parole. This should not be connected to any political events or elections. While applying for parole, a prisoner can specify where they wish to go. This time, he applied to visit the Dera Sacha Sauda ashram, and he was granted permission accordingly. After being released on parole, he reached the ashram in Sirsa in the morning hours," he said.
He further clarified, "As per law, parole can be granted for up to 70 days, and furlough for 21 days in a year. Ram Rahim's parole is entirely within the legal framework."
Reportedly, this is the 12th time Ram Rahim has walked out of jail since his conviction in 2017.
Currently Ram Rahim is incarcerated in Haryana's Sunaria jail serving a sentence of 20 years for raping two of his disciples. In 2019, the Dera chief and three others were also convicted for the murder of a journalist Ram Chander Chhatarpati more than 16 years ago.
Earlier he was granted 20-day parole in October last year, however he wasn't allowed to participate in election related activities, making speeches and staying in the state during the period.
