Gujarat building collapse: Gujarat building collapse: In a tragic and dreadful incident, seven bodies were recovered, several still feared trapped under the rubble a day after a six-story building collapsed in Surat.
The incident unfolded in Surat's Sachin Pali village amid incessant and torrential rains.
The residential structure, located in Sachin Pali village, had 30 apartments, five of which were occupied, and it fell amid continuous heavy rains over recent days.
Chief Fire Officer Pareek added that a woman was rescued safely from the debris, and a total of seven bodies were retrieved.
"During the operation, we heard a woman's voice from beneath the debris. After digging out the debris, the firemen safely rescued her. We continued the search operation and have so far recovered seven bodies," he said.
Chief Fire Officer Pareek added that there are no reports of any more missing persons.
"However, the search operation is still underway," he said.
The building, built in 2017, housed five families when it collapsed. Police reported that several residents were at work at the time, while many others, who worked night shifts, were sleeping inside.
Locals described a scene of chaos following the sudden collapse on Saturday as they rushed to rescue anyone trapped under the debris. Despite being only eight years old, officials noted that most of the flats were vacant and in poor condition.
