Vegetable prices soar: Following the recent surge in tomato prices, new reports regarding a significant increase in the prices of green chillies have surfaced. According to media reports, the price of green chillies has reached close to Rs 400 per kg in specific regions of India.

Reportedly, green chilli prices remained at Rs 100 per kg in Chennai while in Kolkata it reached Rs 350 kg.

Reason for price hike

The reason reported for the increase in price was a significant decline in the arrival of chiles during the last few days.

Farmers in Andhra Pradesh, a major provider of chillies, have switched to other crops due to low pricing in the previous harvest. As a result, the majority of the chillies arriving in Chennai are from Karnataka, significantly affecting supply and costs.

Hike in prices of other vegetables

Tomatoes: Price of tomatoes has also recently shot up in the markets across the country from Rs 10-20 per kg to a price of Rs 80-100 per kg. The reason behind this is the dip in supply due to heatwaves in tomato-growing areas and heavy rain.

Ginger: Price of ginger has soared to Rs 350 per kg in Kolkata.

Green peas: Green peas have grown pricey, with prices reaching Rs 280/kg.

Prices of vegetables like brinjal, cabbage, lady finger and cauliflower have also skyrocketed thereby pinching a hole in the buyers' pockets.

Cauliflower: Cauliflower prices went up to Rs 60 per kg from Rs 40 per kg in early May.

Cabbage: Price of cabbage has touched Rs 60/kg from ₹30-40/kg mark.

Price of potatoes and onion also saw a marginal rise from Rs 20/kg in May to Rs 30/kg in July.
