Google maps misleads Assam police as cops end up in Nagaland; help captive by locals
PTC News Desk: Google Maps once again seem to find itself surrounded by controversy as a 16 member team of Assam Police ended up in Nagaland after Google maps mislead them into wrong directions. Adding to their misery, they were thrashed and attacked by locals who mistook them for criminals.
The incident happened in Nagaland's Mokokchung district on Tuesday night when the police team were carrying out a raid to catch a criminal.
The cops who were in civil dress and armed inadvertently cross the border and reached Mokokchung district in Nagaland. As soon as they reached, the locals attacked them and held captive for a night, however they were later rescued by Nagaland police.
A police official said that Google Maps mistakenly showed a tea garden, which was actually in Nagaland, to be in Assam, leading to confusion.
"Of the 16 personnel, only three were in uniform and the rest were in civil dress. This also led to confusion among the locals. They also attacked the team and one of our personnel was injured," a police official said.
