Google Maps faces investigation after major car accident in UP that left 3 dead

PTC Web Desk: Google is cooperating with the Indian authorities investigating the deaths of three men who tragically drove off an incomplete bridge in Uttar Pradesh while reportedly following directions on Google Maps.

The incident occurred early Sunday when the group was travelling to a wedding. Their car plunged into the Ramganga River after taking a route that led to the unfinished bridge. According to the police, the driver relied on the navigation app, which directed them onto the hazardous path.

The authorities have since questioned representatives from Google Maps and officials from the government’s public works department to understand how the tragedy unfolded. A Google spokesperson expressed condolences, stating, "Our deepest sympathies go out to the families. We are working closely with the authorities and offering our support to investigate the issue."

The local police revealed that the bridge had been damaged during the floods last year, rendering it unsafe for travel.

This accident is reminiscent of a similar incident in Kerala last year, where two doctors lost their lives after their car drove into the Periyar river while following GPS directions.
