Ghibli Art: Chandigarh Police issues advisory on data privacy risks

PTC Web Desk: The Cyber Crime Police Station, UT Chandigarh, has issued a critical advisory warning against cybercrimes linked to Ghibli art, particularly involving online scams, data breaches, and identity theft. Cybercriminals are exploiting the popularity of Studio Ghibli to deceive fans, steal personal data, and distribute malicious software.

The cyber cell has identified key cybercrime threats. Fraudulent websites and auction platforms falsely claim to sell authentic Studio Ghibli merchandise and artwork. These illegitimate platforms often steal payment information, deliver counterfeit goods, or disappear after transactions. Users are urged to verify website authenticity before making any purchases.

The advisory further states cybercriminals send emails masquerading as official Ghibli updates, luring fans into clicking malicious links that install malware or steal personal data. Fraudsters create fake Ghibli-themed competitions to extract sensitive information or trick users into downloading harmful files.

Cybercriminals embed malware and ransomware within seemingly harmless Ghibli wallpapers, art packs, or downloadable content. Once installed, these malicious programmes can lock devices, steal data, or spy on users.

Fake social media profiles impersonating fan artists trick users into sharing personal information or purchasing counterfeit artworks. The Chandigarh Police has advised users to engage only with verified accounts and avoid sharing sensitive data on untrusted platforms.

The advisory states uploading images or granting camera access to certain AI-based apps poses severe privacy risks. Cybercriminals and unethical AI firms collect and store facial data, which, unlike passwords, cannot be changed once compromised. This information may be sold on the dark web, leading to synthetic identity fraud, deepfake scams, and stalking threats.
