Fog disrupts travel in Delhi: 100 flights delayed, several diverted
PTC News Desk: Delhi and its neighboring regions are currently grappling with dense fog, causing significant disruptions to air and train travel. The impact of reduced visibility is evident, particularly in the national capital, as Delhi's airport issues a fog alert, urging travelers to remain informed about their flight details.
Despite the end of a two-week winter break, schools in the city are reopening, albeit with restricted timings due to the severe cold. The transport sector is facing challenges, with 18 trains experiencing delays today.
Delhi airport, a major hub for domestic and international flights, is at the center of the chaos, with thousands of passengers patiently awaiting their flights. The airport authorities have advised travelers to stay updated on their flight details, given the usual delays during foggy mornings.
Flight tracker website flightradar24 reports that 168 flights have been delayed, and 84 flights have been canceled at Delhi airport today, with an average delay of approximately one hour. Major airlines, including IndiGo, SpiceJet, and Vistara, have cautioned passengers about potential disruptions, citing adverse weather conditions in both Delhi and Kolkata. Vistara mentioned the diversion of an early morning Delhi-Kolkata flight to Hyderabad.

The air quality, despite the fog, has shown a slight improvement, shifting from the 'severe' category to 'very poor.' However, the dense fog continues to impact travel plans for thousands of commuters.
This is not the first instance of such disruptions, as a similar foggy condition wreaked havoc on flight and train services in Delhi the previous day, leading to zero visibility in the airport area. The minimum temperature in the city was recorded at 7 degrees Celsius, marking the first cold wave day of the season on Friday, with temperatures dipping further to 3.9 degrees Celsius. Saturday witnessed the coldest night at 3 degrees Celsius, compounding the challenges faced by both travelers and residents alike.
