Farmers' protest: Internet services suspended in parts of Ambala district

Chandigarh, February 27: In a bid to maintain public order, the Haryana Department of Home Affairs has issued an order to suspend mobile internet services, bulk SMS, and dongle services in certain areas of Ambala district. The decision comes in response to concerns raised by the Deputy Commissioner of Ambala regarding the potential repercussions of the 'Delhi Chalo' call by farmer organisations.

The order, dated February 27, highlights the apprehension of tension, annoyance, agitation, and potential damage to public and private property in Ambala amid farmers' protest. The authorities express concern over the misuse of internet services for spreading inflammatory material and false rumors, which could lead to disruptions in public utilities and law and order.

The Home Secretary of Haryana, in the exercise of conferred powers, has directed the suspension of mobile internet services (2G/3G/4G/5G/CDMA/GPRS), bulk SMS (excluding banking and mobile recharge), and all dongle services in the jurisdiction of Police Stations Sadar Ambala, Panjokhera, and Naggal in district Ambala, Haryana. The suspension, effective from February 28, at 00:01 hrs to February 29, at 23:59 hrs, aims to curb the spread of misinformation and rumors through social media platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, and Twitter.

However, the order states that essential services such as individual SMS, mobile recharge, banking SMS, voice calls, internet services provided by broadband, and lease lines of corporate and domestic households would not be affected.

The Chief Secretary of Haryana, Chairman Review Committee, has been informed, and the Additional Chief Secretary to the Government of Haryana, Home Department, has directed the ADGP/CID, Haryana, to implement the order through all mobile service providers.
