Farmers' protest at Shambhu border: Supreme Court sets up high-level committee to address farmers' issues

Farmers' protest at Shambhu border: The Supreme Court on Monday set up a committee to amicably resolve the grievances of protesting farmers at the Shambhu border. The committee will be headed by former Punjab and Haryana High Court judge Justice Nawab Singh.

A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan directed that the committee hold its first meeting within a week. The Supreme Court stated that farmer issues should not be politicised and that the committee should address them in phases.

The apex court also ruled that farmers would be free to move their peaceful protests to other locations.

The apex court was hearing the Haryana government's petition contesting the high court's order to remove the barricades placed at the Shambhu border near Ambala, where farmers have been protesting since February 13.

The Supreme Court has asked that Justice Nawab Singh-led committee meet with the protesting farmers and listen to their demands in order to gain a better understanding of the situation. The court has also directed the committee to reach out to the farmers and request that they remove their tractors from the Shambhu border area.
