Farmers agree to meet SC high powered committee, says Punjab govt; top court defers hearing till January 10

PTC News Desk: The Punjab government informed the Supreme Court that farmer leader jagjit Singh Dallewal has agreed to meet the high powered committee constituted by the top court.

A bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and N K Singh were informed about the development by Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal who is appearing for the Punjab government. The court adjourned the hearing on a plea filed regarding compliance of court's directive to Punjab government to provide Dallewal medical supervision and shift him to hospital.

The top court meanwhile also clarified that the directives issued to Punjab government do not imply persuading Jagjit Singh Dallewal to break his fast , who is sitting on an indefinite hunger strike at Punjab Haryana border.

Sibal requested the bench- which is considering a contempt petition filed against the Punjab officials for not shifting farmers' leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal(who has been on a hunger strike) to hospital- to adjourn the hearing. The court allowed Sibal’s request to adjourn the hearing in view of the fresh development and fixed it for hearing next on January 10.

Dallewal has been on fast-unto-death since November 26 at the Khanauri border, demanding the Union Government to accept farmers' demands including a statutory guarantee for Minimum Support Price for crops. Apart from being a cancer patient, Dallewal suffers from age-related ailments.
