Arvind Kejriwal arrested; what's next?

PTC News Desk:The Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal Thursday evening in connection with a liquor policy case. AAP leaders Atishi and Saurabh Bharadwaj have already stated that they suspected the ED will arrest him today.

Kejriwal is the second sitting chief minister to be arrested in recent times, following Hemant Soren of Jharkhand.

What happens next?

On Thursday, the AAP leadership announced that Kejriwal would stay chief minister and that the national capital will be run from jail.

Delhi minister Atishi has informed that the party has already moved the Supreme Court for quashing Kejriwal's arrest. "We have asked for an urgent hearing by the Supreme Cpurt tonight itself," Atishi said.

Earlier, Enforcement Directorate (ED) team reached the residence of Kejriwal for questioning, just hours after Delhi High Court denied protection to Kejriwal in  excise policy-linked money laundering case.

HC denies interim protection to Kejriwal

Delhi High Court, earlier in the day, refused to provide any interim protection from coercive action to Kejriwal, stating at this point we are not inclined to grant an interim relief. However, the court sought a response from ED on this new interim plea and scheduled the hearing for April 22, 2024.

“We have heard both the sides. However, at this stage, we are not inclined [to pass any order],” the Court said.

The AAP chief had filed a new petition in the Delhi High Court, requesting no coercive action against him and challenging all summonses issued by the Enforcement Directorate in the excise policy case.

ED has issued nine summonses to him in the Excise case so far.
