ED conducts raids at relative of former RG Kar principal and two other locations in Bengal
PTC News Desk: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted raids on Friday at multiple locations across West Bengal, including Howrah, Sonarpur, and Hooghly, in connection with a financial scam involving RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
These searches are part of an investigation linked to the alleged corruption and financial irregularities at the institution, which came to light following the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor in August this year. The incident sparked nationwide outrage and protests.

Among the premises raided was the residence of a relative of Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College. The ED's actions follow a case it registered last week based on a First Information Report (FIR) filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The CBI had earlier named Dr. Ghosh in its investigation into both the doctor's murder and the financial misconduct at the hospital.
The FIR includes charges of criminal conspiracy, cheating, dishonesty, and violations under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, all of which are serious, non-bailable offenses. These charges point to a pattern of corruption within the institution, with allegations that Dr. Ghosh was involved in financial misconduct during his tenure.
Dr. Ghosh served as the principal of RG Kar Medical College from February 2021 until his transfer in September 2023. However, he unexpectedly returned to the role just a month after his transfer and remained in the position until the tragic rape and murder of the trainee doctor occurred.
On September 2, Dr. Ghosh was arrested by the CBI in connection with the corruption case and has since been in the custody of the agency as investigations continue into the financial scam and the murder case.
